Winter Program
We are pleased to offer our comprehensive instructional clinics for PPC pool session members.
Regular winter pool sessions and instructional clinics will run Sundays from 4:30-6:30, starting Jan 15th, 2012 and will run until May 13, 2012. (no session on April 8th, Easter Sunday)
All registered and paid pool session members must complete a 1 hr "safety orientation clinic" prior to paddling. These will be offered on a sign up schedule to new members throughout the Jan sessions (schedule below). Members joining later in the year may schedule individual safety orientation clinics as needed. Please e-mail from the site.
We encourage members to bring (clean) personal boats to the pool for sessions. A limited amount of club boats will be made available for use during clinics and practice time. With limited boats and space, we remind members that if you are borrowing a club boat outside of a structured clinic, please remember you will need to share with other members.
To register you must:
- hold a current PPC basic membership;
- have paid and registered for pool sessions (or drop in fees);
- have successfully completed the basic safety orientation clinic;
- have signed a PPC waiver form.
- sign up in advance - please contact the club to sign up or sign up at a pool session
Pool clinics are offered free of charge, with your pool session fee. Each clinic is broken down into 1 hour time slots. Some are stand alone, some are offered as a progression over multiple evenings. Certain clinics have pre-requisites (please see descriptions). Clinics will start right at 4:30 or 5:30 p.m. so please be punctual, warmed up, and ready to learn.
*Please arrive 15 minutes early so you can select and size your equipment, stretch, and be on the water for your start time
If you are on the waiting list, we will contact you if a space becomes available.
Equipment
Just prior to each clinic, registered participants will have first choice of club boats and equipment. We suggest wearing a warm (synthetic or neoprene) top and shorts for comfort. Nose plugs and goggles for underwater skills are always a good idea. Water socks or neoprene booties help keep your feet protected while on deck and in the boat (but are not necessary).
We encourage members to bring their own equipment if possible. To participate in a clinic, you must have a kayak, skirt, and paddle (all in safe and working order).
Cancellations
As we have limited space and equipment available for these clinics, we expect that if you sign up, you do your best to show up. If a scheduling conflict comes up, please inform us as early as possible so that we may make your space (or boat) available to another member (by the Friday leading up to the clinic at latest if possible). In the case of last minute emergency or sickness, please let us know ASAP.
Clinic Descriptions – PPC 2012 Pool Season
Safety Orientation (mandatory first clinic for all new club members)
All new club members must start off with this safety orientation. The focus of this session is to introduce the use and care of the basic equipment (kayak, skirt, paddles), using the paddle, how to get into and out of the boat on the deck, and develop competency and comfort in getting out of the kayak while flipped over in the water. Our focus is on safety and comfort while working with each participant through a proven progression, at their own pace.
Introduction to Kayaking (pre-requisite for all other clinics)
New to kayaking? Join us for this 2 part introductory clinic designed to give you the basic skills needed for safe and competent kayaking. Increase your comfort and develop control. Skills will include body positioning and balance, wet exit comfort drills, sweeps, draws, bracing, and forward and reverse paddling.
Fundamentals Review (suggested for returning members)
Returning members who have taken the introductory skill clinics last year are encouraged to take these review clinics. Start off the pool season with this review and ensure you are practicing good technique. Review #1 covers strokes (balance, forward and reverse, power box, sweeps, draws) Review #2 covers bracing and partner rescues
Partner Rescues (pre-requisite: Introduction to Kayaking)
Learn the proper technique to help a fellow paddler rescue themselves without the roll or having to get out of their boat. Great for partner spotting, skills practice, and safety while paddling in groups.
Rolling (pre-requisite: Introduction to Kayaking, Partner Rescues, Fundamental Review)
This two part clinic is intended for those who have not yet learned the kayak roll or they are rolling, but it is weak and inconsistent. We will break down this crucial maneuver into a proven series of fundamental progressions and drills designed to give you a solid foundation and lead you to a reliable roll.
